City plans to relocate fuel depot to Marunda

Governor Fauzi Bowo has suggested that Pertamina’s fuel depot in Plumpang, North Jakarta, be relocated to the neighboring Marunda for safety reasons, an official said Wednesday.

“The governor is concerned about the safety of residents living around the fuel depot,” said city spokesman Cucu Ahmad Kurnia.

“That area has become too densely populated.”

He added Marunda had been proposed because it was “safer” and was set to become a new special economic zone.

The Plumpang fuel depot, the largest in the country, was severely damaged in a fire in January 2009.

Cucu said the depot would no longer be the biggest facility of its kind, as the city had issued a permit for a privately managed fuel depot in Tanjung Priok, also in North Jakarta.

He added the new depot, with a holding capacity of 250 million liters, was built by PT AKR Corporindo and a Dutch company.

It would open in March.
